Surge is a small oil painting, just 2 by 3 inches matted to 3 by 4 inches, that explores the restless energy of a breaking wave. I worked entirely with a palette knife to build texture and movement, layering shades of blue to shape the wave’s volume while white and softer tones trace the foam and spray. Hints of yellow, purple, and aqua add unexpected depth and a vibrant resonance beneath the surface. The brushstrokes carry the wave’s surge forward, capturing both the force and fluidity of water in motion. The piece is set in a simple black frame with white matting to focus attention on the dynamic forms and color.
